Now part of Lincoln College of New England's Suffield campus, Clemens College was founded in 1992 as the Swiss Hospitality Institute, in Washington, Connecticut. In 1994, the institution was approved to confer collegiate programs at the associate degree level, and was renamed the International College of Hospitality Management, César Ritz. In 2003, under new ownership, the college was relocated to Suffield, Connecticut, on the grounds of the former St. Alphonsus College. In 2007, the name was changed to Clemens College to honor Samuel Clemens, one of Connecticut’s best loved literary figures, better known by his pen-name, Mark Twain.
In 2010, Clemens College in Suffield, CT became a branch campus of Lincoln College of New England and maintains many of the same traditions. "Clemens College supports our long term strategy of providing Lincoln students with the opportunity to advance their education with higher degree offerings and consequently greater career opportunities," said Dave Carney, Chairman and CEO of Lincoln. "Not only will our culinary and hospitality students in Connecticut benefit from our acquisition of Clemens College, but once we offer courses online, all of our culinary and hospitality students will have the opportunity to obtain a regionally accredited degree. Further, over time we will add other disciplines to this campus."
Clemens College educational approach is based on two simple but rigorous principles:
• Professionalism is a key component of success in any career. To be successful, students must get in the habit of demonstrating the highest standards of professional behavior. Paid internships in professional workplaces are essential to this process.
• Excellence in any career requires the breadth of knowledge and personal insight that only a liberal arts education can provide.
