Dental Chairside Assistants play important roles in the patient experience. In addition to working side-by-side with dentists to ensure procedures are performed smoothly, efficiently and comfortably, they are often the first ones to greet patients as they settle into an exam chair. Assistants help patients get comfortable, ask about recent medical and dental health issues, take X-Rays and more.
Because they spend so much time interacting with patients – many of whom may be anxious or tense about visiting the dentist – dental assistants must also possess outstanding interpersonal skills in order to calm fears and make patients feel more at ease. From the time a patient is seated to the time they leave, it is the Chairside Assistant who can most directly affect how smoothly an appointment goes.
Dental Chairside Assistants may also help prepare instrument trays for the Dental Hygienists who perform routine cleanings. During dental procedures, they transfer instruments to the dentist and maintain the operating field through the use of the dental light, the air/water syringe, the high volume evacuation, saliva ejector and mouth props.
