The goal of the Occupational Therapy Assisting Program is to provide meaningful and appropriate educational experiences that enable students to develop knowledge and achieve competency in entry-level skills. The program leads to certification as an occupational therapy assistant (COTA).
Accreditation and Certification
The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). Graduates are able to sit for the National Certification Examination to become a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). A felony conviction may affect a grduate's ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.

OT practitioners can be credentialed at either professional (occupational therapist) or technical (occupational herapy assistant) levels.

Internships
All practitioners must complete supervised clinical internships in a variety of health and human service settings. Some of the sites where Briarwood students have interned are:

- St. Raphael’s Hospital, New Haven, CT
- The Institute of Living, Hartford, CT
- Hartford Public Schools
Student Club
The Student Occupational Therapy Assistant Club (SOTA) strives to increase awareness in the community related to healthcare and occupational therapy services. The club also holds several fundraising events each year to support charitable organizations.
